Asthma is a common condition among men, women, and children in the United States. Once you know you or your child has asthma, you can work with your doctor to create a treatment plan as well as an emergency plan when a difficult asthma flare-up occurs. How is Asthma Diagnosed?
A variety of tests can be run to test for asthma. Some of the more common tests include PFT (pulmonary function tests), the methacholine challenge, and the inflammation assessment with nitric oxide. Whether you or your child is experiencing coughing, a tight chest, wheezing, or shortness of breath, it may be wise to come in for an asthma test, as these are common indicators of the condition.
For your testing, we ask that you:
- Wear clothes that are loose-fitting
- Eat a smaller meal before coming in
- Avoid exercise at least 30 minutes prior to the test
- Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol about four hours before your appointment
- Adjust any medications that could hinder your results
After your test, we'll be able to determine if you or your child has asthma. From there, we can help create a chronic disease management plan so you can live comfortably with this diagnosis and understand how to handle asthmatic emergencies.
